What happens during a gynaecology appointment?

First, the doctor conducts a detailed medical interview with you. They will enquire about the date of your last menstrual period, cycle length and any worrying symptoms. Next, the doctor will ask you to undress from the waist down and sit in an examination chair. The doctor will examine the external organs. If you are sexually active, the doctor will place a speculum inside the vagina to examine the cervix. At this moment, it is also possible to collect material for the Pap smear test. Next, the doctor will perform an ultrasound scan, to assess the anatomy of the uterus and ovaries.

What day of the cycle is the best for a gynaecology visit?

The pelvic exam may be conducted on any day of the cycle. However, if the aim of the appointment is to collect material for the Pap smear test or the bacterial/mycological culture, please schedule your visit at least two days after the end of your period. Material collected during bleeding does not yield reliable results.

When should you start seeing a gynaecologist?

It is recommended to arrange the first gynaecology appointment at the age of 18. If you are sexually active, it is recommended to see a gynaecologist earlier.

Can pelvic exams be performed in a virgin?

Of course. In females who are not sexually active yet, the doctor can examine the external genitalia, the cervix and collect material for the Pap test. Should an ultrasound scan be needed, an abdominal one will be performed.

I'm pregnant - when should I come to the first obstetrics appointment?

If you are healthy and feel good, you should see the doctor within 2-4 weeks from the date of the expected menstrual period, which will correspond to week 6-8 of the pregnancy. The doctor will perform the first foetal ultrasound and order basic laboratory tests.
