CTG cardiotocographic examination

CTG cardiotocographic examination

CTG cardiotocographic examination is one of the basic examinations in obstetrics. It allows non-invasive monitoring of fetal heart function, uterine contraction and fetal motor activity.

CTG – what is the test?

The cardiotocographic examination is painless and completely safe for mother and child, it lasts about 30 minutes, during which the woman lies on her side or sits, and on her stomach there are two small heads attached with belts. One head registers the child’s heart function, while the other has contractile uterine activity, in addition. The CTG apparatus is also equipped with the so-called “marker” – a special button that activates the pregnant woman when she feels the baby’s movements The CTG record usually lasts 30 minutes, but it can be extended at any time when the result is doubtful, there are disturbing signals or when the child is not very active.

How should I prepare for the CTG test?

CTG examination does not require any prior preparation, however, due to the fact that the examination lasts about 30 minutes (or longer, if it is necessary to continue recording), during which the pregnant woman is in a lying or sitting position, the toilet should be used before the start of the test.

When should CTG tests be performed?

If the pregnancy proceeds properly, the first CTG record should be performed in the second half of the third trimester.

CTG recording can also be carried out at a much earlier stage of pregnancy, from the 25th week of pregnancy, when pregnancy is complicated, hypertension, gestational diabetes, placental pathologies, multiple pregnancy or bleeding from the genital tract and when the patient feels weakening of fetal movements and noticeable contractions of the uterine muscle.
